The 2012 Reel Rasquache Art & Film Festival (RRAFF) returns to East Los Angeles thanks to the presenting sponsorship of Casa 0101. In its 9th consecutive year, the festival will take place May 18-20, 2012 at the newly expanded Casa 0101 facilities in the heart of the burgeoning Boyle Heights 1st Street arts corridor. Founded in 2000 by the Los Angeles actor, playwright, screenwriter (Real Women Have Curves) and novelist (Hungry Woman in Paris) Josefina López, Casa 0101 has established itself as a leading arts venue for Los Angeles’ East Side. Walking distance from the Metro Gold Line Mariachi Plaza station, the new Casa 0101 home is located near the corner of 1st and St. Louis Streets and includes a 99-seat theatre, art gallery, and learning center. López and Casa 0101 Executive Director, Emmanuel Deleage are long-standing followers and supporters of RRAFF. RRAFF Executive Director, John Ramirez states, “The 2012 Casa 0101 and Reel Rasquache partnership is a wonderful development that’s rich with mutually rewarding collaborative possibilities.” RRAFF 2012 Co-Director, Angela María Ortíz S. (www.sefijaonline.com) adds that the Casa 0101 and RRAFF12 bond is, “a perfect meeting of shared passion for and commitment to nurturing the arts of, in, and for Boyle Heights and East Los Angeles communities overall.”
Bringing together independent filmmakers from across the country with Latino advocates in the entertainment industry, the Reel Rasquache Art & Film Festival showcases films by or about the U.S. Latino experience in all genres and formats–animation, dramatic and documentary shorts and features, experimental, webisodes, and, introducing this year, a forum on cell phone filmmaking. In addition to around-the-clock film programs, the weekend-long festival will include live music and dance, a Youth Filmmakers’ Showcase, filmmaking workshops, directors’ roundtable, an art exhibit, networking receptions, and the annual closing night award ceremony that recognizes leaders, pioneers, and trailblazers in U.S. Latino film and art.
